San Diego, CA, January 19, 2004, — On a recent visit to San Diego to accept the "Award of Democracy and Peace" from the Institute of the Americas on the UCSD campus, President and Mrs. Lagos Escobar of Chile took time out for a stroll through Quail Botanical Gardens. Accompanied by an entourage of secret service, the President and his wife explored the gardens for over an hour.

An avid horticulturist, the visit to Quail Gardens marked the President's only visit to a San Diego attraction while he was here. The President and his wife proved to be very knowledgeable about many of the plants and easily recognized the Chilean native plants on display at the gardens.

"We were very honored to have the President and his wife single out Quail Gardens for their only visit to a San Diego attraction," commented Duval. "The President and his wife enjoyed their visit were also very impressed with Seeds of Wonder , our children's garden, and commented on the importance of introducing nature at a young age," Duval added.
